I have to say, your way of thinking and fitting of your ships is really very intuitive and focused, more than is usually seen by new players.
I think you'll do well in EVE.

I think it's great.
To be honest, sticking two drones in a Velator, with good Drone skills, will actually do some nice damage, especially for a beginning player like he's seeing.
Cheap, effective, and intuitive.
I like it.

I think he was referring to the high slot module (Drone Link Augmentor I think it's called) that increases Drone control range by 20km, not an actual rig.
